EYPs Assessment
In the new phase of EYPS the assessment
process will take place in two stages.
Formative
Assessment
Candidates will initially go through
formative assessment by completing a progress review with an
assessor. This review will identify:
- Understanding of the standards
- Progress towards the standards
- Gaps in knowledge, understanding or
practice
- Whether progress has been made in completing
written submissions
This will take place approximately 3 months
before the final assessment and will be completed by a trained and
qualified assessor. This review may take place either face to face
or, if not possible, through Skype or telephone.
Following the review the candidate and the assessor will work
together to complete an action plan which will be signed by the
assessor and kept in the candidate’s file.
Summative
Assessment
Summative assessment will be completed
via:
Written reflective accounts of practice
- Candidates will be asked to produce 3
reflective accounts to demonstrate practice and leadership within
the age groups of Babies, Toddlers and Pre School.
- 2 other brief reflective accounts will be
required to provide any additional evidence that is necessary.
- All standards must be demonstrated through
the written submissions.
Supporting documentary evidence
- A variety of evidence can be submitted in the
candidate’s portfolio but overall it should be relevant and
succinct.
- The significance of the evidence should be
identified by the candidate.
- No more than 3 witness statements may be
included as evidence.
A setting visit
- The visit should last approximately 3 hours
and will include a candidate interview, a tour of the setting, an
observation of practice and an interview with the candidate’s line
manager.
- Interim feedback will be given at the end of
the setting visit and the candidate will be advised whether further
evidence is needed to meet the standards.
- If further evidence is required the candidate
can be invited back for a later final interview to provide the
additional necessary evidence. This interview may be held by the
same assessor on moderation day or by a Senior Assessor over the
telephone.
Outcomes
There are 3
potential outcomes to the assessment process:
Met
The candidate has
demonstrated they meet the standards in full, subject to
moderation.
Shortfall
The candidate
is close to meeting the standards and will be given the opportunity
to provide additional evidence against named standards.
Not Met
The candidate
has significant weaknesses, the candidate will have the opportunity
to provide additional evidence in relation to groups of standards
or age groups, however, in the assessor’s opinion, further training
and experience is necessary.
Throughout the assessment process
candidates must demonstrate competency across 39 standards.
Candidates must not only show they can meet the standards through
their own practice but also lead and support others to do the same.
Standards must also be demonstrated across the full birth to five
age range, referred to as ‘babies’, ‘toddlers’ and ‘young
children’.

defined by the Children’s Workforce Development Council please

The standards are grouped under 6 headings which
highlight the breadth of knowledge and experience expected of
EYPs.
- Knowledge and understanding
- Effective practice
- Relationships with children
- Communicating and working in partnership with
families and carers
- Teamwork and collaboration
- Professional development
CWDC produce a comprehensive
guide to the standards outlining the practice that
must be demonstrated to meet each one.
