Parents/carers and the SENCo should make decisions at this stage of possible next steps. These could be all or some of the following:

  • Continue to share information and observe the child further
  • Seek advice from further professionals/agencies
  • Arrange to meet again in the near future to follow-up concerns and discussion

It is essential that SENCos receive consent from parents/carers before they contact or share information with outside agencies.
See attached Birth to Five Parent Consent leaflet.
For more information on the Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs see relevant pages on the Birth to Five Service Website.

Birth to Five Service:

The Birth to Five Service provides support for Private, Voluntary and Independent Settings to implement the Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs. The support includes training in the role of SENCo and in developing practice that works in partnership with parents/carers.

Continuation of Support for Parents/Carers for Children with Additional Needs:

The Birth to Five Service encourages setting to continue to work with parents/carers throughout the child’s attendance at the setting.
This will include:

  • Regular communication with parents/carers (telephone conversations, communication booklets, daily contact)
  • Regular review meetings
  • Open afternoons/evenings where assessments are shared

Settings can also be a source of sharing useful information with parents/carers regarding  local information services and  support groups/societies.
