English as an Additional Language (EAL)

A child who has English as an additional language will already have one or more languages and be learning English in addition to this. For example: Nathan speaks Cantonese with his family. He has started to learn English since coming to pre-school. Nathan will hopefully become bilingual using more than one language at home and at pre-school.

A child who is encouraged to continue using their first language will most likely make good progress in English. The child will also keep strong links with their culture and identity.

Supporting children with EAL in Lincolnshire

The number of children with English as an additional language across Lincolnshire is increasing. Whilst many children are being successfully supported by practitioners, meeting their needs can be a challenge. The Birth to Five Service works in partnership with Lincolnshire County Council’s Ethnic Minority Achievement Support Service (EMASS) in supporting settings to meet the needs of children with English as an additional language.
