Outdoor Quiet & Reflective Areas

An effective ‘ Outdoor Quiet & Reflective Area’ would include many features. This should:

  • Be positioned in an outdoor area which is least likely to be disturbed.
  • Be arranged as an enclosed area using drapes, canopies, dens, tents or willow structures.
  • Be arranged so that it is comfortable, secure and inviting to all children and adults.
  • Contain suitable outdoor seating such as logs, benches or soft seating, if appropriate.
  • Consider including comforting fabrics and blankets for children to cocoon themselves within.
  • Ensure that the environment caters for calming, multi-sensory experiences by providing minimal yet carefully planned quality resources for sound, colour, smell and touch.
  • Have continuous provision such as;
     - Wind chimes
     - Mobiles
     - Water features
     - Sensory garden provision
     - Tactile objects which promote curiosity and discovery
     - Books where positive and special experiences at the setting and home are shared through updated photographs
     - Persona dolls or animals.
  • Be enhanced according to children’s interests, possible themes and observations with pictures, books and resources which explore emotions.
  • Have established routines to ensure that children know how and when to use the area.
  • Have opportunities for planned small group or individual work where adults model effective use of the area.
