Indoor Malleable Area

An effective ‘ Indoor Malleable Area’ would include many features. This should:

  • Provide children with a variety of opportunities to use fingers, hands and even feet to explore textures
  • House a variety of tools and equipment to explore a range of malleable materials. This could include cutters, rollers, sticks and squeezers.
  • Offer a variety of malleable materials such as playdough, clay, jelly and cooked pulses
  • Include resources which are clearly labelled and accessible to all children
  • Be transferable to learning areas as appropriate. For example, having playdough in the role-play area  and clay with  construction areas
  • Make use of builder’s trays to house some malleable materials. For example, jelly, cornflour and cooked pasta
  • Provide opportunities to bake and cook
  • Modelled and discussed by adults as and where necessary
  • Enhanced according to children’s interests, possible themes and on-going observations.
